Experimental evidence of the wind-induced bias of precipitation gauges using particle image velocimetry and particle tracking in the wind tunnel

Wind tunnel (WT) experiments were conducted to reproduce the wind-induced deviation of rain drop trajectories when approaching collector catching-type gauges. Three typical outer shapes instrument body (cylindrical, inverted-conical and “chimney” shapes) tested using full-scale models. The airflow pattern upstream above was measured with a Particle Image Velocimetry technique, after injecting passive tracer in flow. Tests performed by releasing water drops WT flow mimic raindrops fall. near gauge tracked quantitatively high-speed camera. trajectories, induced bluff-body aerodynamics gauge, is interpreted here comparing around three instruments highlight effect their different shapes. shape, that some weighing type gauges, demonstrated lower performance respect cylindrical showing most relevant deviating immersed wind field.
